The United States Marshals Service was originally established on September 24, 1789 by the nation’s first Congress. It is the oldest Federal law enforcement agency in the United States. President George Washington appointed the first thirteen United States Marshals, one for each of the original thirteen states.
As a branch of the US Department of Justice, the current US Marshals Service has 94 Marshals, each appointed by the President and subject to confirmation by the US Senate. More than 3,320 Deputy Marshals form the backbone of the agency.
The United States Marshals Posse for the District of Arizona has been in existence for over 20 years and works to educate resident of Arizona about the US Marshals Service through a variety of community service projects. The US Marshals Posse also assists the US Marshals Service in an all-volunteer support capacity on a wide range of projects as requested by the US Marshal for Arizona.
